Last week was Homecoming week. Tyler Clark, a former student, came to visit the classroom. He shared the importance of working hard and maintaining good grades. I told some funny stories of Tyler that made everyone giggle (and his face turn red). :) The band came through on Friday, along with some cheerleaders and football players. It was an exciting day!
We've wrapped up place value, discovering strategies, and long addition and subtraction. We've started multiplication and discovering prime and composite numbers. Last week we did discovery activities with factors and multiples. Check out the 'Math' tab for some pictures. Very soon we'll be doing 2-digit times 2-digit multiplication. In today's lesson, we discovered that there are REALLY only 21 multiplication facts we need to know. The rest are ones that are soooooo easy or are commutative property. We also discussed the importance of knowing our facts. We have 3 Math Masters so far this year....
In Language Arts we've finished the novel, Rules by Cynthia Lord. Each 'day' the kids had a HOT (higher order thinking) question that went along with their reading. There are many obvious themes within this story, but we realized the 'main' theme was acceptance. This week our focus will be on finding the theme in poetry. It's important that your child is reading every night. I set individual October reading goals last week with your child. I was so impressed with the amount of effort and enthusiasm from September's goals. Keep up the good work!
With the cooler temperatures, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. It can get pretty chilly up here on 'the hill.'
